Complete Heroes/Penny Holiday Paperbacks

I love the immersive depth and worldbuilding from fantasy writers like J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Brandon Sanderson, and Michael J. Sullivan. I’ve been captivated by the stories of whimsical adventure experienced in the “Redwall” series by Brian Jacques, the careful placement of words by Patrick Rothfuss, and the combination battle royale, time travel, and character-centered storytelling of the video game Chrono Trigger. All of these have had an impact on my own writing style and the types of stories I like to tell. Out of this has blossomed the “Heroes of Time” series.

And, within this overall series, the story of Captain Zale “the Gale” Murdoch is very dear to me. Many things about this character—his mannerisms, appearance, and sayings—are inspired by a bygone friend, colleague, and family member. So unique and interesting was this person that I approached him with the idea of basing a character off him—something I don’t often seek to do with characters—and together we brainstormed what became this highly specialized seafaring merchant, Zale, and his feisty red panda companion, Boomer. He passed away just months later of a rare lung condition, but I’m confident he would have loved his fantasy alter-ego and these stories’ glowing reception from both reviewers and fans.
